In 1864 President Lincoln signed legislation protecting the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley for "public use, resort, and recreation." For the first time in our nation's history, the federal government set aside scenic natural areas to be protected for the benefit of future generations. ![]() The national park idea is rooted in the Mariposa Grove. Best seen during a stop in or out of the Valley, this rest stop has breathtaking views of a little of everything Yosemite has to offer: a waterfall, beautiful views, towering granite walls, and greenery of all sorts.Facebook Twitter Online: History and Ecology of Mariposa Grove / Giant Sequoias: Located in the southern portion of Yosemite, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is the largest sequoia grove in Yosemite and is home to over 500 mature giant sequoias. If you enter Yosemite on El Portal Road (Highway 140) you’ll pass underneath this iconic arch. Get off the grid and hike from camp to camp for a true backcountry experience. Camps are spaced 6 to 10 miles apart, but no fear…you won’t have to carry all of that pesky backpacking equiptment. Yosemite High Sierra Camp reservations are highly sought after, so you’ll have to be prepared to be put in a lottery and have flexible travel dates. Applications are accepted in September and October for the following year and winners are notified in the spring. Some sites are even horse friendly! Campsites vary in amenities like toilets and water sourcing so you can rough it as much as you feel comfortable with. With 13 campsite options spread throughout the park you have your choice. Make sure to bring ear plugs since the tents are fairly close together and are made of canvas.Ĭamping (in tents) is the most popular Yosemite lodging option. We would suggest this option if you’re looking to save money and want to stay close to the valley action. The tents are located in the middle of Yosemite Valley and have all the necessary sleeping essentials. Half Dome Village, formerly Curry Village is our go to budget accommodations. This is one of the closest resorts to the park and it’s perfect for driving into the park for the day. Recreation of course is the main reason you visit Yosemite. Choose from one bedroom cottages, larger cabins for families, or you can even opt to camp out in one of their custom camping sites outfitted with everything you need, down to the foam mattresses, sleeping bags and toiletries! ![]() They have a cabin feel, but with modern touches like usb ports on the nightstands, which we always appreciate. The rooms are spacious and tucked away in various areas of the property, so you feel like you are on your own private getaway. For the adults, there are plenty of places to relax the sun deck, fire pits, and the sunset viewpoint are all perfect places to sip on a glass of wine and chat with friends. The adults loved the zipline! They even have a giant sandbox and play room, complete with a pool table and ping pong. There is a pool, hot tub, and play structures galore– for kids big and small. We recently took our kiddos here with us and it’s one of our favorite family friendly places to stay. It has just been remodeled and has all of the modern amenities you could want, paired with the ambience of the great outdoors.
